Iran, US still far apart on deal to end war as Qatar pushes mediation
USO•Iran and the United States remain far from an agreement to end their war as Qatar intensifies mediation. The US carried out what an official called defensive strikes on Iran's Qeshm island, while oil prices rose about 1.3%.
1. Mediation efforts continue
A senior Iranian official said Iran and the United States were still far from a deal to end their war as Qatar stepped up efforts to bridge differences. Qatar's foreign ministry said both sides were reviewing proposals put forward by mediators, and an official briefed on the talks expected feedback from Washington and Tehran within 36 hours.
2. Strikes and demands
The United States carried out what a US official described as defensive strikes on Iran's Qeshm island, targeting surface-to-air missiles used against US assets. Another official said the strikes appeared limited and did not signal a return to major combat operations. Iran says it will not accept what it calls excessive US demands, and has called for oil sanctions to be waived, the US naval blockade to end and frozen Iranian funds to be released.
3. Regional tensions
Iranian officials warned of a forceful response to US strikes, while President Donald Trump renewed threats of possible military action. Oil prices rose about 1.3% after falling more than 7% the previous day. Iran's foreign minister said talks with Saudi Arabia were continuing on regional security arrangements.
