Iranian officials gloat as US voters deal blow to Trump
USO•Iranian officials portrayed the US midterm results as a rejection of Trump’s war, while senior sources said Tehran remained on high alert for possible renewed strikes. The conflict has sharply raised global oil and gas prices as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is severely disrupted.
1. Iran welcomes election result
Iranian officials said US voters had rejected the war launched by President Donald Trump. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said Americans had said “NO TO WAR,” while Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned against concessions to the United States and said US hostility would persist regardless of which party was in power.
2. Tehran remains on alert
Two senior Iranian sources said Tehran was concerned Trump could seek to compensate for the election result with a military strike and remained on high alert. The US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28; Iran responded with strikes on Israel and Gulf states hosting US bases. Global oil and gas prices have shot up as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted, after Tehran declared it closed.
