Italy will handle its residual 4.9% stake in the Tuscan lender in a way that does not interfere with M&A moves affecting the bailed-out lender, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti told reporters on Wednesday.
Rome will keep its shareholding at least until the end of Intesa Sanpaolo's unsolicited €30.6 billion ($35.34 billion) cash-and-share bid for MPS, a source familiar with Giorgetti's thinking on the matter said.

Italy's fifth-largest bank on Thursday unveiled upgraded targets through 2028, forecasting net profit of around €2.7 billion as the lender seeks to capitalise on the integration of Banca Popolare di Sondrio and expand higher-fee businesses.
The bank has submitted a non-binding expression of interest to BFF Bank aimed at acquiring the businesses related to its payments and depositary bank.

Italy's fourth-largest bank strengthened its 2026 profit outlook on Wednesday and said it would consider a tie-up with the Italian unit of Credit Agricole, after abandoning plans for a deal with Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

The Tuscan lender has replied to market watchdog Consob, which had asked for details on the failed merger discussions with Banco BPM, saying the two banks only had an exchange of information via advisors, Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Thursday. In its response, MPS did not mention alternative options, even if press reports have suggested it was considering a takeover on Banco, Il Sole added.

Germany's Commerzbank, nearing a possible takeover by the Italian lender, said on Thursday that net profit rose 94% in the second quarter, beating analysts' expectations.
