Itron and Toumetis Launch AI System to Prevent Wildfire-Related Outages
Itron and Toumetis will deploy an AI-driven predictive analytics system under SDG&E’s EPIC program in Southern California to combine smart meter and sensor data for faster outage restoration and proactive wildfire prevention. The platform integrates Cascadence ML with Gen5 Riva meters to detect precursor electrical conditions before faults occur.
1. Project Overview
On February 3, Itron partnered with Toumetis and San Diego Gas & Electric under the EPIC program to launch a wildfire mitigation project in Southern California. The initiative aims to enhance grid reliability and reduce fire risk by leveraging smart grid infrastructure.
2. Technology Integration
The project combines Toumetis’s Cascadence predictive analytics and machine learning platform with Itron’s Gen5 Riva meters, smart meter data, relay signals, and substation sensors. This unified system provides a comprehensive view of grid conditions at the edge.
3. Expected Outcomes
By identifying electrical anomalies that precede faults, the AI solution enables crews to prioritize high-risk areas, prevent outages, and restore power more quickly. Early warning of fire-prone conditions is designed to support proactive wildfire prevention efforts.
4. Company Operations
Itron operates through Networked Solutions, Device Solutions, and Outcomes segments, offering end-to-end water, energy, and smart city services worldwide. Its focus on AI-driven grid analytics supports utilities in optimizing operations and reducing operational risk.
