Itron, PG&E expand collaboration on grid edge intelligence for wildfire mitigation in California
PCG•Itron and PG&E expanded a strategic collaboration to deploy grid-edge intelligence aimed at reducing wildfire ignition risk in California. The first phase targets about 3,000 devices, with roughly 10,000 planned through 2027 and PG&E targeting hundreds of thousands by 2030.
1. Deployment plans
The program will validate fault prevention and location at scale using thousands of grid-edge sensing endpoints in high fire-risk areas. Rollout begins in the Santa Cruz area, focusing on faster fault detection and pinpointing to reduce outage frequency and duration. The project receives partial funding from PG&E’s EPIC electric R&D program.
