JD.com launches Joybuy UK, eyes €2.2bn bid, challenging Amazon
AMZN•JD.com launched its Joybuy platform in Britain and is exploring takeover bids for Currys, Argos and Very Group after placing a €2.2bn bid for Ceconomy. UK ministers face calls for a parliamentary probe into alleged Chinese state subsidies as customs duty loophole closure moves to October 2028.
1. UK Expansion and Acquisition Plans
JD.com has rolled out its Joybuy e-commerce platform in the UK and is targeting acquisitions of prominent retailers. The company recently placed a €2.2bn bid for Ceconomy and is also evaluating offers for Currys, Argos and Very Group, posing a direct competitive threat to Amazon’s British operations.
2. Parliamentary Probe and Customs Duty Overhaul
Shadow security ministers are urging Parliament to investigate whether Chinese state subsidies have given JD.com an unfair advantage, citing EU inquiries into financing, tax incentives and grants. Concurrently, the UK Treasury has accelerated plans to end the £135 de minimis customs duty exemption by October 2028, aiming to protect domestic and established online retailers, including Amazon.
