Jefferies Lifts Albemarle Target to $167 as Lithium Prices Climb 37.5%
Albemarle shares surged 12% after Jefferies boosted its price target from $152 to $167 on projected lithium demand growth for robotics and AI. This follows a 37.5% increase in Chinese lithium carbonate prices and Albemarle’s Q3 energy storage volumes and cost cuts, positioning it for a potential 2026 cyclical recovery.
1. Analyst Upgrade Drives Double-Digit Rally
Shares of Albemarle jumped more than 10% in early trading after Jefferies analyst Laurence Alexander raised his target price from $152 to $167 and maintained a Buy rating. This upgrade followed a third consecutive weekly gain in lithium carbonate benchmarks, which have climbed 37.5% in China over the past month. Investor enthusiasm was fueled by the view that the extended oversupply cycle in the lithium market is finally abating, setting the stage for improved price realizations in 2026.
2. Expanding Non-EV and Energy Storage Demand
While electric vehicles remain the primary growth engine for lithium, Albemarle highlighted ‘better-than-expected’ energy storage volumes in Q3 and growing uptake in robotics and physical AI applications. Autonomous industrial robots, warehouse automation systems and backup power installations are increasingly relying on lithium-ion batteries. Management disclosed that energy storage sales volumes exceeded internal forecasts by 8% year-to-date, underscoring the company’s diversification beyond traditional automotive markets.
3. Cost Discipline and Balance Sheet Strength
To capitalize on a potential cyclical upturn, Albemarle has implemented $150 million in annual cost savings and productivity initiatives since early 2024. The company also completed divestitures of non-core specialty chemicals assets, strengthening its balance sheet by reducing net debt by $400 million over the past two quarters. With a gross margin of 12.3% and a debt-to-EBITDA ratio improved to 1.8x from 2.3x a year ago, Albemarle is positioned to generate free cash flow more than $600 million in fiscal 2026, even under conservative lithium price assumptions.
