KBR Wins $350M USGS Contract for Cloud and AI Modernization of EROS Center
KBR has been awarded a five-year indefinite-delivery contract by USGS with a $350 million ceiling to modernize the EROS Center using cloud-native architectures, AI/ML and advanced software engineering. The work supports preparation for the three-satellite Landsat Next constellation launching in 2030, enhancing global coverage and spectral imaging capabilities.
1. KBR Secures $350M USGS Technical Support Services Contract
KBR has been awarded a five-year, Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract by the U.S. Geological Survey, with a total ceiling of $350 million. Under this award, KBR will provide advanced technical solutions to the Earth Resources Observation and Science Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and other USGS facilities nationwide. The scope includes cloud-native architectures, artificial intelligence/machine learning, advanced software and systems engineering, secure IT infrastructure, algorithm development and enterprise-scale data analytics. This contract marks KBR’s fifth consecutive award from USGS over a 24-year partnership.
2. Strategic Capabilities to Support Landsat Next Constellation
KBR’s work will underpin the USGS’s preparations for the Landsat Next satellite constellation, scheduled to launch in 2030. Landsat Next will feature three satellites equipped with sensors delivering global coverage every six days, 26 spectral bands and higher spatial resolution than current missions. KBR will modernize mission-critical operations to preserve decades of Earth-observation records, enable real-time disaster response analytics and advance natural resource management. The integration of AI/ML and cloud environments is expected to reduce data processing times by up to 40% compared to legacy systems.
3. Investor Impact and Long-Term Growth Prospects
Following the contract announcement, KBR shares rose by 6.7% on the first trading day, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s government services backlog and technology expertise. The USGS award reinforces KBR’s positioning in the growing Earth-science and remote-sensing market, where annual federal funding has increased by over 12% since FY2021. With a global workforce of approximately 37,000 and operations in more than 29 countries, KBR anticipates leveraging this contract win to pursue additional multi-year opportunities in space, defense and civilian science programs.
