Kopin Secures Phase I SBIR, Builds on $15.4M IBAS Award for MicroLED Displays

KOPNKOPN

Kopin won a Phase I SBIR contract to develop a second full-color, smaller-format MicroLED display for soldier-borne applications, building on its $15.4 million IBAS award. It targets superior brightness, lower power consumption and anticipates follow-on U.S. Army contracts to accelerate domestic MicroLED production.

1. SBIR Award for New MicroLED Display

Kopin has won a Phase I SBIR contract from the U.S. Government to develop a second full-color, smaller-format MicroLED display designed for soldier-borne applications. This award marks the second MicroLED-focused contract in six months and follows a $15.4 million IBAS award in September 2025.

2. Focus on Brightness and Power Efficiency

The development effort aims to deliver superior brightness and visual performance with lower power consumption, targeting near-eye defense applications. The architecture is engineered to enhance situational awareness for soldiers through brighter, more rugged MicroLED technology.

3. Anticipated Follow-On Army Contracts

Kopin anticipates additional U.S. Army development contracts to accelerate domestic MicroLED design and production capabilities. These follow-on efforts are intended to strengthen the U.S. supply chain and align with the Army’s objective of in-country MicroLED manufacturing.

4. Strategic Defense Implications

MicroLED displays under this SBIR are expected to play a key role in future weapon-sight and AR systems by providing necessary brightness in daylight conditions and reducing battery burden. The technology spans helmet-mounted visualization, advanced weapon sights and precision targeting devices across multiple Army programs.
