Korean Hyundai Union Warns Robot Automation and U.S. Shift Could Cost Thousands of Jobs

Hyundai’s Elantra Hybrid has been named Best Compact Hybrid for the Money by U.S. News & World Report for the second consecutive year. The award recognizes the model’s combination of affordability and quality, with a starting MSRP below $30,000 and an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 49 mpg city, 52 mpg highway and 50 mpg combined. Since its debut, the Elantra Hybrid’s blending of customer-friendly features, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission has driven annual U.S. sales growth of 12% year-over-year through 2025.

2. Tucson Secures Best Compact SUV Title for Third Straight Year

For the third consecutive year, Hyundai’s Tucson has earned the Best Compact SUV for the Money award. This marks the fifth time overall that Tucson has been honored since 2019. The model lineup includes five powertrain options—2.5L ICE, Hybrid, Hybrid N Line, Plug-in Hybrid and XRT—allowing pricing to range from approximately $28,000 to $40,000. In 2025, Tucson sales in the U.S. exceeded 230,000 units, maintaining its position as Hyundai’s best-selling vehicle and contributing to a 9% increase in overall SUV segment share.

3. South Korean Union Raises Concerns Over Humanoid Robots

Hyundai Motor’s main labour union in South Korea has formally objected to plans to deploy humanoid robots on its assembly lines without prior approval. The union warns that replacing manual tasks with robots could lead to ‘employment shocks,’ potentially impacting up to 5,000 workers across multiple plants. Company executives have indicated that robots will handle repetitive tasks such as parts transport and welding in an effort to improve productivity by 15% and reduce workplace injuries by 20%. Negotiations between management and union representatives are scheduled for early February.

4. U.S. Operations Drive $26 Billion Investment Through 2028

Hyundai Motor Group has committed $26 billion of capital investment in the U.S. between 2025 and 2028, reinforcing its North American headquarters in Fountain Valley, California, and expanding production capacity at the Alabama assembly plant and the new Metaplant America facility. Current operations include five R&D centers and more than 855 independent dealerships nationwide. In 2025 alone, Hyundai’s U.S. investment supported the launch of three new electrified models, contributing to a 30% increase in EV sales and bolstering the company’s ‘Progress for Humanity’ vision.
