Kroger to Close Nine Fulfillment Centers and Three California Stores
Kroger closed nine fulfillment centers and cut 1,700 jobs as part of a network restructuring across its 2,700 stores in 35 states and D.C. The company also filed notices to shut three California locations, eliminating 171 roles, supplementing its June 2025 plan to shutter 60 stores over 18 months.
1. Fulfillment Center Closures and Layoffs
Kroger has decommissioned nine fulfillment centers, resulting in the elimination of approximately 1,700 positions. This measure is aimed at tightening its distribution network across roughly 2,700 supermarkets in 35 states plus Washington, D.C., to drive operational efficiencies.
2. Nationwide Store Reduction Plan
In June 2025 Kroger announced it would close 60 underperforming stores over an 18-month period. This strategic retreat is designed to concentrate resources on higher-yield locations and optimize its retail footprint.
3. California Store Shutdowns and WARN Notices
In March 2026 Kroger filed WARN notices to permanently shut three California stores, cutting 171 jobs. The company has indicated it will offer transfer and reassignment opportunities where operationally feasible while closing these locations.
