Kyocera Unveils Underwater Optical Communications, OPTINITY® Module and Sub-1mm Meta-Lens at CES 2026

At CES 2026, Kyocera unveiled Underwater Wireless Optical Communication for high-speed subsea data and its OPTINITY® optoelectronic module for energy-efficient AI and autonomous-driving use. It also introduced a sub-1mm metasurface meta-lens shifting focal positions by wavelength to create compact wearable aerial displays with natural 3D depth perception.

1. Kyocera Showcases Breakthrough Underwater Wireless Optical Communication

At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Kyocera Corporation will unveil its Underwater Wireless Optical Communication (UWOC) system, capable of transmitting data at rates exceeding 100 Mbps over distances of up to 50 meters in clear water. Built on a patented blue-green laser diode array, the UWOC module maintains signal stability within ±0.5 dB under moderate turbidity conditions. Kyocera projects that commercial adoption in subsea exploration and offshore energy monitoring could drive incremental component sales of ¥15 billion over the next three years.

2. Meta-Lens-Powered Wearable Aerial Display Signals New Consumer Market Entry

Leveraging its newly developed metasurface-based lens less than 1 mm thick, Kyocera has produced a wearable aerial display prototype that recreates three-dimensional images with natural depth perception. The device uses wavelength-controlled focal shifts—green wavelengths project at 120 mm from the eye, red at 80 mm—to generate realistic depth cues without bulky optics. Kyocera estimates potential VR/AR module shipments of 200,000 units in fiscal 2027, representing a new revenue stream that could contribute an additional ¥10 billion in annual sales once manufacturing scales.

3. OPTINITY® Module and mmWave Sensor Expand Autonomous Driving Footprint

Also on exhibit is the OPTINITY® optoelectronic integrated module, which integrates 4 × 25 Gbps laser drivers with low-noise photodiodes for in-vehicle data exchange. The module reduces board area by 40% and power consumption by 30% compared to previous generations. In parallel, a high-resolution mmWave sensor demonstration highlights 0.1° angular resolution at 79 GHz, enhancing object detection in autonomous applications. Kyocera forecasts that combined sales of optoelectronic and sensing products for automotive markets will grow at a 12% CAGR through fiscal 2028, building on its ¥200 billion in automotive component revenue for the year ended March 31, 2025.
