Lanxess switches Krefeld-Uerdingen iron oxide pigment dryer to hydrogen, cutting CO2 by 6,000 tons a year

The change will cut the unit's annual CO2 footprint by about 6,000 metric tons.
Hydrogen is supplied via pipeline from adjacent Covestro operations, sourced as a byproduct from chlorine electrolysis.
The hydrogen burner was installed in late 2025, with phased commissioning supported by upgraded controls, metering and safety systems.

Lanxess switched a large-scale spray dryer for iron oxide pigments at Krefeld-Uerdingen to hydrogen fuel from natural gas.
The unit is designed to run fully on hydrogen in continuous operation.
