Largest US grid operator PJM begins annual review of proposed large load adjustments
XLU•PJM Interconnection began its annual review of proposed adjustments to its 2027 long-term load forecast, using new guidelines to assess whether large-load projects are likely to materialize. About 12 utilities presented proposals, primarily covering data centers.
1. Review of load proposals
PJM said the review is driven primarily by rising electricity demand across its regions from data centers and other large users. About 12 utilities, including Dominion Energy, NOVEC, FirstEnergy and Duke, presented proposals to PJM’s Load Analysis Subcommittee on Tuesday.
2. Forecast timeline
PJM will evaluate the proposals alongside other information about expected demand growth. It retained Charles River Associates to assess data center demand trends and factors that could affect further growth; the consultant is expected to present its findings in October. PJM plans to share its final load adjustment in November and publish the 2027 long-term load forecast in January.
