LIVE MARKETS - US stocks advance with some records

Finishing up 0.7% on Thursday, the S&P 500 `.SPX` marked an intraday record and then a record closing high as a tame wholesale inflation reading eased investor worries and technology `.SPLRCT` provided by far the biggest boost of any sector. Seven of the S&P 500's 11 major sectors rose with communication services `.SPLRCL` and real estate `.SPLRCR` adding more than 1%, while technology rose almost 1%. On the other side of the spectrum, materials `.SPLRCM` led losses with a 0.7% drop followed by more modest declines in energy `.SPNY`, industrials `.SPLRCI` and healthcare `.SPXHC`. Besides the S&P 500's 27th record finish so far in 2026, there were some other milestones. With a modest 0.6% advance, the financial services index `.SPSY` marked its first record close since Wednesday the week before. And investors were also looking beyond growth and large caps. While S&P 500 growth stocks `.IGX` outperformed value `.IVX` in daily percentage gains, both boasted record finishes on Thursday, and it was actually value's fifth record close in a row. The last time growth boasted a finishing record was last Friday, August 7. The S&P equal dollar weighted index `.SPXEW` also finished with a record for its third day in a row. On the smaller side, the S&P 400 mid-cap index `.MID` and the Russell 2000 small-cap index `.RUT` both marked their highest finishes ever. The benchmark index's biggest contribution came from Apple Inc `AAPL.O` and memory stock Micron Technology `MU.O`, which rose 4%. SanDisk `SNDK.O`, also a memory chip company, brought a smaller index point boost, but its shares soared almost 14%. Megacaps Meta Platforms `META.O`, Tesla `TSLA.O`, Microsoft `MSFT.O`, and Nvidia `NVDA.O` were also firmly in the driver's seat. In S&P 500 Software and Services `.SPLRCIS`, Workday Inc `WDAY.O` was the biggest gainer with a 17% rally after Reuters reported that Silver Lake is in talks to acquire the company. On the flip side, the S&P 500's biggest drag came from Cisco Systems `CSCO.O`, which sank 8.4% for its biggest one-day loss since mid-February, after its annual revenue guidance beat analyst expectations, but not by enough to impress investors. Meanwhile, in energy markets, oil prices settled down more than 2%, even though the prospects for peace in the Middle East were as unclear as ever. The recently appointed head of Iran's Basij paramilitary unit said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz is "under Iran's control and management." On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States had "total control" of the strategic waterway. Dollar ~flat; bitcoin slips; gold down >1%, U.S. crude down >2% U.S. 10-year Treasury yield falls to ~4.65% Next up on the economic data front is retail sales, due out before the market open on Friday, and the University of Michigan's sentiment survey, due out 30 minutes after the trading session begins.
