Wall Street indexes finish lower as rates take center stage
Wall Street's main indexes finished lower for the day and ended the week fairly close to where they started after Friday's jobs report blew past expectations, rekindling bets that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates this month.
Added to the strong jobs report was a threat from President Donald Trump to stop trade with some countries unless the Federal Reserve cuts rates. So it seems that the Fed may have to choose between either risking presidential ire if it raises rates in two weeks, or risking a hit to credibility, if it cuts or holds rates steady, after recent hawkish comments from Chair Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole.
