LMT•Lockheed Martin inaugurated an 88,000-square-foot Missile Assembly Building 5 in Courtland, Alabama to produce Next Generation Interceptors for the Missile Defense Agency. The plant integrates digital twin methodology, automation and smart workflows to accelerate high-quality, repeatable production and support expansion of Alabama’s defense manufacturing footprint.

The 88,000-square-foot Missile Assembly Building 5 in Courtland consolidates advanced digital manufacturing tools, automation and smart workflows. Digital twin methodology links design and factory floor data to reduce risk and ensure high-efficiency, repeatable production of interceptor components.
2. Role in Next Generation Interceptor Program
MAB-5 is dedicated to producing Next Generation Interceptors for the Missile Defense Agency, leveraging open-system architecture that supports in-silo upgrades. The facility’s modular design and integrated processes are intended to accelerate production ahead of the CDR milestone and strengthen layered missile defense.
3. Local Economic and Strategic Impact
This expansion reinforces Lockheed Martin’s presence in north Alabama, where operations date back to 1963 and MAB-5 joins a Troy integration site. Local leaders project new high-skill manufacturing jobs and an economic boost to the Tennessee Valley region.
