Markets cheer Democratic win, betting divided Washington means fewer policy shocks
SPY•Global stocks rallied and Treasury yields fell as investors bet that Democratic control of Congress would limit policy changes and spending. Investors also weighed possible tougher AI oversight and pressure on data-center construction.
1. Markets welcome gridlock
Global stocks rallied after Democrats won control of Congress in the midterm elections, as investors bet divided government would curb major policy shifts. Treasury yields also fell, with investors expecting tighter limits on spending and less pressure on bond yields.
2. AI oversight in focus
Investors expect greater scrutiny of the AI sector, which could slow data-center construction. Amazon.com, Meta Platforms and Alphabet shares rose, while IREN, Hut 8, Applied Digital and Core Scientific shares fell; the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index also declined.
3. Fiscal and geopolitical risks
Investors were relieved that a promised $5,000 payment to US adults in the event of a Republican victory would not materialise. Congress set a December 11 deadline to reach a fiscal 2027 funding agreement, while strategists warned that market volatility could continue.
