Mastercard Agent Pay Powers Europe’s First AI Agent Transaction with Santander

MAMA

Mastercard Agent Pay processed its first live AI agent transaction in Europe with Santander under regulated security and privacy controls. This launch follows rollouts in the US with Citi, PayPal integration, Australia’s debut with CBA and New Zealand’s with Westpac.

1. European Launch Milestone

Mastercard and Santander completed Europe’s first end-to-end AI agent-initiated payment using Mastercard Agent Pay, leveraging PayOS for transaction orchestration within Santander’s regulated banking environment. The transaction marked a milestone in agentic commerce by enabling an AI system to search, select, and execute a payment under predefined customer permissions.

2. Global Rollout History

This European debut follows Mastercard Agent Pay’s US introduction for Citi and U.S. Bank cardholders and its integration into PayPal’s wallet, as well as the January launch in Australia with Commonwealth Bank of Australia and February in New Zealand with Westpac. Mastercard has also formed partnerships with Stripe, Google, and Ant International’s Antom to expand its agentic payments network.

3. Security and Governance Framework

Mastercard and Santander emphasize robust security, governance, and consumer protection in AI-driven transactions, implementing strict controls, privacy safeguards, and compliance with regulatory standards. Santander plans extended testing and scaling of the service while maintaining resilience and regulatory alignment to support emerging AI payment models.
