Meta bans TikTok ads on its platforms in US
META•Meta has immediately banned ads by ByteDance and campaigns linking to TikTok and other ByteDance properties in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
1. Immediate ban
Meta said it has banned ByteDance advertisements on its platforms in seven countries, including the US. The ban also covers third-party advertisers running campaigns that link to TikTok and other ByteDance properties in those countries.
2. Meta's explanation
Meta said it does not have to run ads from a competitor seeking to pull people off its apps, and called declining promotional services to a competitor a normal business practice. It said it would continue to compete on product quality and user experience.
3. Competition and safety
The move comes amid a rivalry over user engagement, creators and advertising dollars. Meta has also urged TikTok and YouTube to follow teen-safety steps Meta agreed to take after settling with US states for up to $18 billion; TikTok reached a separate settlement with Alabama in September requiring new usage limits and enhanced age-verification measures.
