Meta Expands Global 13+ Content Filters, Trials Instagram Feed Balance Feature
META•Meta has expanded its 13+ content filters globally on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger to hide inappropriate posts and block teens from risky pages and chats. It is testing an Instagram feature to diversify teen feeds and plans a stricter 'limited content' setting on Facebook and Messenger.
1. Global Expansion of Teen Safeguards
Meta has extended its initial 13+ safeguard framework, launched last October, to all international markets on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. The update sets default filters to hide posts deemed inappropriate and restricts teens from accessing pages, groups, events and profiles that frequently share such content.
2. Instagram Feed Diversification Test
On Instagram, Meta is trialing a feed tool designed to limit repetitive exposure to specific content categories—such as nutrition, workout tips or mental health topics—to encourage broader content discovery among users aged 13 and over.
3. Upcoming Limited Content Setting
Later this year, a stricter 'limited content' option will roll out on Facebook and Messenger, further tightening visibility of potentially harmful posts and curbing teens’ interactions with accounts that post inappropriate material.
