Meta Faces Virginia Appeal Over One-Hour Usage Limit, Forms New AI Division

METAMETA

Virginia has appealed a preliminary injunction against its law limiting under-16s to one hour of daily social media use, risking reinstatement of age-verification requirements effective January 1. Meta also launched a new Applied AI Engineering division within Reality Labs, implementing a flat structure with a 50:1 contributor-to-manager ratio.

1. Virginia Appeals Social Media Usage Law

Virginia has asked the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to set aside a February injunction that blocked its law capping under-16s at one hour of daily social media. If the injunction is overturned, platforms would need to enforce age verification and usage limits originally effective January 1, potentially reducing youth engagement metrics.

2. Creation of Applied AI Engineering Organization

Meta has established a new Applied AI Engineering division within Reality Labs designed with a flat hierarchy, allowing up to 50 individual contributors per manager. The move aims to accelerate AI feature development and improve collaboration across hardware and software teams working on augmented and virtual reality initiatives.
