Meta Platforms May Fill Shelved Oracle-OpenAI Abilene AI Campus Expansion

METAMETA

Oracle and OpenAI shelved plans to lease additional capacity at the 1,000-acre Abilene AI data center, creating an opening for Meta Platforms to become a tenant. Nvidia is facilitating discussions and has posted a $150 million deposit with Crusoe, potentially accelerating Meta’s AI infrastructure expansion.

1. Shelved Expansion at Abilene Campus

Oracle and OpenAI abandoned plans to lease additional sections of the 1,000-acre Abilene AI data center after financing disputes and evolving compute requirements, despite the core agreement for 4.5 gigawatts of capacity remaining on schedule.

2. Nvidia’s Role and Deposit

Nvidia has lodged a $150 million deposit with Crusoe Energy to secure potential tenancy slots and is actively brokering discussions between Crusoe and Meta Platforms to fill the vacated capacity.

3. Implications for Meta’s AI Infrastructure

Leasing underutilized capacity at Abilene could enable Meta Platforms to accelerate its AI compute expansion, lower capital outlays on greenfield builds and leverage shared operational infrastructure for generative AI workloads.
