Meta Threads Tops X with 141.5M Mobile DAUs; Unveils Meta Compute Plan

METAMETA

Meta's Threads app logged 141.5M daily mobile users, surpassing X's 125M, while X still leads with about 150M daily web visits. Meta also announced its Meta Compute initiative to build tens of gigawatts of AI data center capacity, targeting hundreds of gigawatts over time.

1. Threads Mobile Usage Surpasses X

Meta’s text-based platform Threads achieved 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android as of January 7, overtaking Elon Musk’s X, which logged 125 million mobile daily users over the same period, according to Similarweb data cited by TechCrunch. Since its 2023 launch, Threads has shown steady month-over-month growth in mobile engagement, while X retains an edge in web traffic with roughly 150 million daily visits. This milestone underscores Meta’s success in leveraging its massive social-media ecosystem to drive adoption of a direct competitor to X and highlights the company’s ability to attract and retain mobile users at scale.

2. Meta’s AI Infrastructure Build-Out Accelerates

At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month, CEO Mark Zuckerberg detailed Meta Compute, the company’s new AI-focused division charged with centralizing data-center design, supply-chain partnerships and capacity planning. Co-headed by Santosh Janardhan and Daniel Gross, with strategic oversight from President Dina Powell McCormick, the initiative aims to add tens of gigawatts of computing capacity this decade and ultimately scale to hundreds of gigawatts. These investments build on the $39 billion in capital expenditures Meta committed to in 2024 and the midpoint estimate of $71 billion for 2025, reflecting management’s conviction that owning a larger share of compute infrastructure will be a strategic advantage against AI leaders such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.
