Methanex Supplies 80% Emission-Reducing Biomethanol for U.K. Immingham Bunkering Service

MEOHMEOH

Methanex partnered with Exolum and Ørsted to launch the UK’s first commercial biomethanol bunkering service at the Port of Immingham, with Exolum providing infrastructure and Methanex supplying ISCC-certified waste-derived biomethanol. Ørsted will use the service on North Sea wind farm vessels, enabling up to 80% greenhouse gas reduction.

1. Service Launch Details

The Port of Immingham service went live on February 10, marking the UK’s first commercially ready biomethanol bunkering facility. Exolum operates the storage and fuelling infrastructure while Methanex supplies the fuel and Ørsted is the inaugural customer for its maintenance vessels.

2. Methanex Supply and Infrastructure

Methanex will provide ISCC-certified biomethanol produced on the U.S. Gulf Coast from waste-derived feedstocks. Exolum has adapted its existing port terminals to enable safe storage and marine bunkering operations at Immingham.

3. Emissions Reduction and Sector Impact

Biomethanol offers up to 80% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional marine fuels. The initiative targets shipping’s 4.7% share of UK transport CO₂, positioning the port as a hub for low-carbon maritime fuel.

4. Strategic Implications for Methanex

The project expands Methanex’s role in green shipping markets and demonstrates its capability to supply sustainable methanol at scale. Adoption by major energy users like Ørsted could drive long-term contract volumes and enhance Methanex’s renewable chemicals profile.
