Methanex to Indefinitely Idle 860,000 tpy Titan Plant after Gas Contract Lapse
MEOH•Methanex will idle its 860,000 tonne/year Titan methanol plant in Trinidad and Tobago after failing to secure a new natural gas contract before the third-quarter 2026 expiry. The facility will enter preservation for potential future restart, while its 63.1% interest in the Atlas plant remains indefinitely idled.
1. Titan Plant Idling Decision
Methanex announced it could not agree a new natural gas contract for its Titan methanol plant, which has an annual capacity of 860,000 tonnes. With the existing gas agreement expiring in the third quarter of 2026, the company will indefinitely idle the facility and begin preservation efforts.
2. Financial Impact and Cash Flow
Titan is not contributing to the company’s Adjusted EBITDA or Adjusted Free Cash Flow and Methanex does not expect to incur material cash costs from the idling decision. Any updates to production or financial guidance will be disclosed with the second quarter results on July 28, 2026.
3. Atlas Joint Venture Status
The Atlas methanol plant, in which Methanex holds a 63.1% economic interest, remains preserved and indefinitely idled. Atlas has been in standby since its previous shutdown and will continue in a preserved state until market or supply conditions warrant a restart.
4. Preservation Process and Future Optionality
Titan will undergo a preservation process designed to maintain restart readiness should natural gas supply conditions materially improve. Methanex will monitor developments in Trinidad and Tobago’s gas market and reassess its position over the coming years to support long-term shareholder value.
