Mexico demands evidence of alleged cross-border shots after US ambassador comments
EWW•President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico requested evidence for allegations that gunfire from Mexican territory targeted US personnel, saying Mexican forces detected no such incident. Mexico said it had deployed 500 troops and equipment for a joint border security effort.
1. Mexico seeks evidence
Sheinbaum said Monday that Mexico had requested evidence from US authorities about allegations that gunfire originated in Mexico and targeted US personnel. She said Mexican National Guard, Army and Navy personnel had detected no shots fired from Mexican territory toward the United States.
2. Border security effort
US Ambassador Ronald Johnson said a day earlier that shots were fired at US Coast Guard personnel near Tamaulipas and Texas. Mexico announced a joint security effort called Operation Mirror, deploying 500 troops, helicopters, drones and anti-drone equipment along the frontier. Sheinbaum said Mexican authorities proposed mirror operations with US agencies as a precaution.
