Microsoft Backs First U.S. Commercial E-Jet Fuel Plant in Moses Lake
MSFT•Microsoft partnered with Twelve on AirPlant One in Moses Lake, Washington, launching the first U.S. commercial facility producing ASTM-certified sustainable aviation fuel (E-Jet SAF) and E-naphtha from captured CO2, water, and renewable power. CEO Satya Nadella also urged employees to curb excessive AI token usage by selecting the most efficient model for each task.
1. Partnership Launches Sustainable Fuel Production
Microsoft joined Twelve at AirPlant One in Moses Lake, Washington, marking the U.S. debut of a power-to-liquid facility that converts captured carbon dioxide, water, and renewable electricity into ASTM-certified E-Jet sustainable aviation fuel and E-naphtha. Microsoft’s investment and fuel purchase commitments support regular domestic airline operations using this low-carbon SAF without requiring infrastructure or engine modifications.
2. CEO Directs AI Model Efficiency
Satya Nadella addressed growing ‘tokenmaxxing’ within Microsoft, warning that excessive use of AI model tokens inflates cloud costs and reduces efficiency. He instructed teams to match tasks with the appropriate AI model—balancing performance and expense—to optimize resource usage and maintain operational discipline.
