Microsoft joined Amazon, Oracle, Google, Meta and OpenAI at a White House roundtable to pledge covering electricity generation and grid-connection costs for its expanding AI data centers. Microsoft’s 50-year history traces its rise from the 1975 Altair BASIC launch and 1986 IPO to a trillion-dollar software, cloud and AI leader.

1. White House AI Electricity Pledge

On Wednesday, Microsoft joined Amazon, Oracle, Google, Meta and OpenAI at the White House to sign a ratepayer protection pledge committing to cover the electricity needed for AI data centers and fund grid infrastructure to prevent higher consumer rates.

2. Pledge Commitments

Under the agreement, signing companies agreed to build or purchase power for their rapidly growing AI facilities and to pay a corporate electricity rate separate from residential consumers, with the goal of buffering households from rising electricity costs.

3. Electricity Demand Trends

The U.S. data center sector added a record 10 gigawatts of capacity in 2025, driving a 2.8% year-over-year increase in electricity demand, the fastest growth in two decades and prompting calls for self-generation or usage curtailment during grid stress.

4. Microsoft’s Historical Milestones

Microsoft’s legacy began in 1975 with the Altair BASIC partnership, followed by the 1986 IPO at $21 per share, the launch of Windows and Office suites, and growth into a trillion-dollar software, cloud and AI leader.
