Microsoft Leases 700MW Texas Data Center Abandoned by Oracle and OpenAI
Microsoft has agreed to lease the 700-megawatt Abilene, Texas data center project from Crusoe after Oracle and OpenAI abandoned it over financing and capacity disagreements. Oracle is continuing rapid server deployments at its neighboring Stargate campus to support AI workloads.
1. Microsoft Leases Abandoned Data Center
Microsoft has struck a lease with developer Crusoe for the 700-megawatt data center site in Abilene, Texas that was originally slated for occupancy by Oracle and OpenAI. Talks collapsed over financing terms and shifting capacity requirements, enabling Microsoft to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure footprint.
2. Oracle’s Adjacent Campus Strategy
Oracle continues to fill its flagship Stargate campus next to the Abilene site with servers used for training and deploying AI models. The company’s ongoing investments in its own data centers aim to bolster its cloud-computing offerings despite walking away from additional capacity at Abilene.
