Microsoft president says milk faces more regulation than AI
MSFT•Microsoft President Brad Smith said AI needs urgent global regulation, including independent evaluations, breach notifications, emergency brakes and incident reports. He said washing machines and milk face more safety requirements than AI, and named Britain as well placed to lead regulation.
1. Call for global rules
Brad Smith said AI needs urgent global safety rules, with independent evaluators able to assess new developments. He proposed requiring companies to notify victims when systems are breached by rogue AI agents, provide an emergency brake and write incident reports.
2. Britain’s potential role
Smith said Britain was well placed to lead AI regulation because of its AI Security Institute. The institute has voluntary agreements allowing it to assess major AI models before deployment. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said Britain would consider regulating advanced models if the current system proved insufficient.
