Microsoft Secures Power with 20-Year Three Mile Island Nuclear Deal
MSFT•Microsoft signed a 20-year deal to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, offline since 2019, to secure power for its data centers. Over 70% of U.S. grid interconnection requests are withdrawn and half of planned AI data centers are expected to never be built due to power constraints.
1. Microsoft Nuclear Power Agreement
Microsoft has signed a 20-year agreement to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, which has been offline since 2019. The contract is designed to provide a stable, long-term electricity source for its U.S. data center infrastructure, insulating operations from grid volatility.
2. U.S. Grid Interconnection Crisis
More than 70% of grid interconnection applications in the U.S. are now withdrawn because existing transmission networks cannot accommodate new high-demand loads. This reflects a structural shortfall in utility planning as AI and hyperscale computing drive unprecedented power requirements.
3. AI Data Center Pipeline Shrinking
Industry analysis estimates up to 50% of planned AI data centers will never get built due to power capacity and regulatory hurdles. Local permitting resistance, water usage concerns and transmission constraints are increasingly killing smaller projects, leaving only the largest operators able to secure necessary resources.
