Microsoft Unveils MAI Thinking 1 Models and Expands Azure to 500+ Data Centers
MSFT•Microsoft introduced MAI Thinking 1 and MAI Code 1 Flash in-house AI models to power Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot, aiming to reduce third-party model costs. Azure now spans over 500 data centers—adding more capacity in 18 months than the prior decade—and deploys Nvidia Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell GPUs.
1. In-House AI Model Launch
Microsoft introduced MAI Thinking 1, a mid-sized reasoning model, and MAI Code 1 Flash, a cost-effective coding model designed for Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot. These proprietary models are intended to lower reliance on external AI providers and improve long-term margin profiles.
2. Azure Infrastructure Expansion
Azure now operates over 500 data centers, marking an increase of more than 100 centers since early 2025 and surpassing a decade of prior capacity growth in just 18 months. The platform also delivered Nvidia’s Vera Rubin system and deployed more Grace Blackwell GPUs than any other hyperscaler.
