Microsoft's cloud supplier review raises neocloud risks, Chainfir Capital says
MSFT•Chainfir Capital says Microsoft's supplier consolidation is shifting investor focus to delivery, financing and profitability. Microsoft reported $45.2 billion in quarterly capital expenditures and finance leases, while CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN shares each fell roughly half over the past month.
1. Supplier scrutiny shifts
Chainfir Capital says Microsoft's consolidation of AI computing suppliers is shifting investor focus toward delivery capability, financing and profitability rather than contract size. Microsoft is winding down Oracle capacity rented under a 2023 agreement because older Nvidia chips no longer meet its AI workload specifications; the shift is not a spending cut, with Microsoft reporting $45.2 billion in quarterly capital expenditures and finance leases.
2. Neocloud exposure
CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN shares have each fallen roughly half over the past month. Microsoft accounted for 62% of CoreWeave's 2024 revenue, adding to the supplier's customer-concentration risk.
