Midterms over, Democrats plunge into wide-open 2028 presidential race
SPY•With the US midterms over, Democrats are turning to a 2028 presidential primary that could attract dozens of candidates, with no clear favorite. Republicans have a smaller group of potential contenders, led by JD Vance and Marco Rubio.
1. Democrats weigh their direction
Democrats are beginning to focus on a crowded and unpredictable 2028 presidential primary after sweeping victories in Tuesday’s midterms. The party remains divided over whether to move toward the center or further left on issues including healthcare, taxes, policing and foreign policy.
2. Potential candidates emerge
Potential Democratic contenders include former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Strategist Scott Ferson said at least 30 Democrats are asking people close to them whether they should run; none of the nine potential candidates contacted by Reuters confirmed a bid.
3. Republicans face Trump’s shadow
Republicans are weighing how to broaden their appeal after voters expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the economy and foreign policy, while maintaining support from his MAGA base. Vance acknowledged that the war in Iran had cost Republicans the election, while saying there was “a chance” he would not run; Rubio said he had “no plans at this time” to seek the presidency.
