Shares fall after interim setback in norovirus trial
Shares of vaccine maker Moderna (MRNA.O) fall about 4% to $55.71.
The company says its experimental norovirus vaccine candidate missed the statistical benchmark for early success in an interim analysis of a late-stage study.
Moderna will run the norovirus vaccine trial through another season as cases meeting the study's main goal accumulated more slowly than anticipated.
The update was described as "moderately disappointing," as norovirus had been one of the cleaner late-stage infectious disease opportunities beyond COVID-19, RSV and flu, says TD Cowen analyst Tyler Van Buren.
The setback shifts the program from a potential 2026 catalyst to a more uncertain development path and can also modestly weigh on the broader mRNA platform-productivity debate, he says.
The company reports Q2 revenue of $145 million, topping analysts' estimate of $103 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Including the session move, shares are up about 90% year to date.
