Moog tests Niron Iron Nitride rare-earth-free magnets in electromechanical actuators
Moog is testing and qualifying Niron’s iron nitride permanent magnets for defense-application actuators, with commercial production targeted within the next 18 months.
1. Hardware testing begins
Moog outlined test and qualification work using Niron’s iron nitride permanent magnets in electromechanical actuators for defense applications. The development targets rare-earth-free motors for land vehicles, guided munitions, land actuators and missile actuators, with the aim of reducing exposure to foreign mineral supply chains. The joint program moved into hardware testing after a collaboration was announced in December 2025; qualification timelines are under discussion with customers.
