Mosaic to Idle Brazil Facilities, Cutting 1M Tonnes Phosphate, Taking $350M Charge
Mosaic will idle its Araxá and Patrocínio Brazil sites, cutting annual phosphate output by about 1 million tonnes and incurring a Q1 pre-tax charge of $350–400 million, including $275–300 million in impairments. It will pursue Araxá asset sales while developing Patrocínio niobium and expects to reduce capex by $20–30 million and opex by $70–80 million.
1. Facility Idling Plan
Mosaic will idle and demobilize its Araxá Mining and Chemical Complex and related mining at the Patrocínio Complex in Brazil, resulting in workforce reductions at both sites; all idling activities will comply with safety, environmental and tailings dam regulations.
2. Production and Financial Impact
The idling is expected to cut annual phosphate production at Mosaic Fertilizantes by about 1 million tonnes and trigger a first-quarter pre-tax charge of $350–400 million; adjusted EBITDA impact will be limited by elevated sulfur prices, excluding one-time closure costs.
3. Araxá Asset Sale and Niobium Development
The company plans to pursue the sale of Araxá assets while continuing technical assessment and development of the niobium opportunity at Patrocínio, including ongoing sampling and analysis work.
4. Cost Savings and Outlook
Post-transaction annual capital expenditures are projected to decline by $20–30 million and operating expenses by $70–80 million, advancing Mosaic’s focus on capital allocation discipline and returns.
