Mozambique courts South African investment for new gas project
SSL•Mozambique’s state-owned ENH is in talks with Sasol and pipeline company ROMPCO about a roughly $250 million gas project expected to come online in 2030 or 2031.
1. Project plans
The project would center on Beira and Inhassoro and include floating storage and regasification units at Inhassoro and the Port of Beira. A new 140-kilometre pipeline would connect the facilities to the ROMPCO pipeline, which runs from Mozambique to South Africa’s Secunda industrial complex.
2. Gas supply
Mozambique supplies South Africa with gas from Sasol’s Pande and Temane fields, which are expected to be depleted within a few years. The country also has offshore gas resources in the Rovuma Basin. New petroleum laws effective since June require at least 25% of oil and gas production, including LNG, to be allocated to the domestic market.
3. Investment discussions
ENH CEO and chairman Rudencio Morais said the infrastructure is targeted to be ready by 2030 or 2031, alongside other LNG developments. Sasol said it would be premature to speculate on the nature or scale of any potential investment.
