MSCI freezes Turkey index additions and weight increases over free-float concerns

MSCI•MSCI immediately froze certain Turkish equity index changes over free-float reliability and market-integrity concerns, and may consider downgrading Turkey from Emerging Market status if progress is insufficient by June 2027.
MSCI said the freeze blocks increases to Foreign Inclusion Factors and share counts, additions to the Turkey Investable Market Index, and upward size-segment migrations. The company said Turkish authorities’ initial measures need more time to demonstrate sustained enforcement against coordinated trading and independently verifiable free-float disclosures.
If progress is insufficient by June 2027, MSCI will consider consulting on reclassifying Turkey from Emerging Market to Frontier or Standalone Market status. The indexes’ treatment will be reassessed during the 2027 Annual Market Classification Review.
