Musk’s Terafab Seeks 1 Terawatt Capacity, Requests Quotes from Major Chip Equipment Vendors
Elon Musk’s Terafab venture has requested quotes from Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron and Lam Research for photomask, etcher, depositor, cleaning and testing equipment for a pilot Austin fab. The project aims for 1 terawatt of annual computing capacity and includes Intel’s involvement plus Samsung’s Texas capacity allocation.
1. Supplier Engagement Details
Terafab representatives reached out to Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron and Lam Research to obtain price quotes and delivery timelines for a wide array of chipmaking equipment, including photomask writers, etchers, deposition tools, cleaning stations and testers for a pilot production line in Austin.
2. Partner Commitments
Intel has formally joined the initiative, and Samsung proposed allocating additional capacity at its planned Taylor, Texas fabs to support Terafab. This combination of partners provides both technology expertise and manufacturing capacity for the venture’s initial phase.
3. Implications for Equipment Vendors
The project’s ambition to supply 1 terawatt of annual computing capacity could disrupt the established equipment market, putting pressure on leading suppliers such as ASML, while creating a new demand stream for alternative toolmakers and potentially reshaping industry dynamics.
