Natur-Tec Selected for USDA-Backed $5M Packaging Innovation Program

Natur-Tec has been selected as one of seven companies in a USDA Foreign Agricultural Service–backed $5 million Packaging Innovation Program to develop sustainable packaging solutions. The project will commercialize PFAS- and PVDC-free compostable barrier laminates for moisture- and oxygen-sensitive produce, meeting emerging EU and Canada packaging regulations.

1. Program Selection and Scope

Natur-Tec was one of seven companies chosen for the 2026 International Fresh Produce Association Packaging Innovation Program, supported by a $5 million investment from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.

2. Funding and Objectives

The USDA funding aims to accelerate development of packaging that extends shelf life, reduces food loss and waste, and aligns with evolving regulations in key export markets including the EU, Canada, the UK, Japan and Australia.

3. Technology Focus

Natur-Tec will commercialize PFAS- and PVDC-free compostable barrier laminates engineered for moisture- and oxygen-sensitive items such as dried fruits and tree nuts without compromising performance or sustainability.

4. Market and Regulatory Impact

By addressing the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and Canada’s Single-Use Plastics Prohibition, the initiative equips U.S. specialty crop exporters with compliant, high-performance packaging solutions and access to industry leadership and regulatory guidance.
