Navient swings to Q3 core profit on loan-sale gains, fair-value benefits
NAVI•Navient reported Q3 revenue of $60 million and core EPS of $0.03, swinging to a core profit. A $162 million gain on the sale of $750 million in legacy private education loans and $23 million in fair-value benefits contributed to the result.
1. Core profit drivers
Navient swung to a core profit in Q3 as revenue fell sequentially. The sale of $750 million in legacy private education loans generated a $162 million gain, while fair-value election for in-school originations added $23 million.
2. Costs and provisions
Credit-loss provisions rose $59 million to $227 million, mainly due to delinquencies and charge-offs expected to remain elevated longer than anticipated. Operating expenses fell $30 million, helped by lower transition-services and regulatory costs, insurance proceeds and cost-saving initiatives. Navient provided no specific financial guidance for upcoming quarters or the full year in its press release.
