Nearly 12,000 California residents bought EVs using state rebate program
TSLA•Nearly 12,000 California residents have bought electric vehicles since August through a $270 million rebate program funded by the state and automakers. About $70 million has been spent on 11,806 new and 132 used EVs, leaving $200 million in funding.
1. Rebates fund EV purchases
California said nearly 12,000 residents have bought electric vehicles since August using rebates from a new $270 million program. It offers $3,500 for new EVs priced up to $50,000 and $1,750 for used EVs priced no higher than $25,000, for residents buying their first EV.
2. Tesla leads purchases
The program has spent about $70 million on 11,806 new EVs and 132 used EVs, leaving $200 million. Purchases include 5,658 Tesla vehicles, 1,700 Hyundai vehicles, nearly 1,400 Toyota vehicles and 1,100 General Motors vehicles; no funds remain for Tesla models.
3. California sales decline
EVs accounted for 18% of California sales through September 30, down from 23% last year and 25% in 2024. EV sales have fallen in California and nationwide after the federal government removed incentives, while sales have risen globally, fueled by higher oil prices.
