Neither Putin nor Trump reportedly wanted to hang up first after 'very friendly' call
USO•A Kremlin aide reportedly said Putin and Trump had a “very substantive and friendly” call that lasted an hour and a half. The presidents agreed Russia would supply diesel to the U.S. and global markets, prompting a temporary easing of U.S. sanctions on Russian fuel.
1. Call lasted 90 minutes
Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said neither leader wanted to end the call first and that they hung up simultaneously. The Kremlin said most of the conversation focused on efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine; Putin downplayed the likelihood of three-way peace talks resuming soon.
2. Diesel and sanctions
The presidents agreed Russia would supply diesel to the U.S. and global markets to lower fuel prices, prompting an unexpected temporary easing of U.S. sanctions on Russian fuel. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the deal a “weak decision” and “an investment in a war that must be ended.”
3. Peace proposal talks
U.S., Ukrainian and European negotiators held talks in Miami on Friday aimed at reaching agreement on a unified peace proposal in the coming weeks that could be presented to Russia. Efforts to end the fighting have stalled, partly over Russia’s demand for four Ukrainian regions it does not fully control.
