Netflix Faces Danish Subscription Cancellations As Boycott App Downloads Jump 867%
Denmark’s NonUSA and Made O’Meter boycott apps have surged to top App Store charts with combined downloads up 867% week-over-week, prompting reported Netflix subscription cancellations in Denmark in response to U.S. talks over Greenland. The shift could dent Netflix’s EMEA revenue, which reached $3.87 billion in Q4 with 18% year-over-year growth.
1. Danish Boycott Triggers Early Netflix Subscription Cancellations
Residents of Denmark have downloaded the NonUSA and Made O’Meter apps over 867% more in the past week, enabling consumers to identify and avoid U.S.-made products—including Netflix. According to TechCrunch, NonUSA vaulted from 441st to the number-one most-downloaded app in the Danish App Store within days, and Made O’Meter ranks fifth. Early reports indicate more than 5,000 Danish households have cancelled Netflix subscriptions in January, preferring local streaming services. While Denmark represents only about 0.08% of Netflix’s global 325 million paid memberships, this coordinated boycott poses a reputational risk and could erode revenue in neighboring Nordic markets if mirrored in Norway, Sweden and Iceland.
