New Jersey governor warns ports against accepting Russian diesel
USO•New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill warned port officials and terminal operators that accepting Russian diesel violates federal law and could bring civil and criminal penalties. She said Russia has dispatched multiple tankers to the United States, including one that may be headed for the New Jersey coast.
1. Warning to port operators
In a Nov. 2 letter, Sherrill said Congress banned Russian energy imports in 2022 under the Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act. She said importing Russian diesel could expose businesses and individuals using New Jersey ports to harsh civil and criminal penalties.
2. Russian diesel shipments
Sherrill said Russia had dispatched multiple diesel tankers to the United States since President Donald Trump granted Russia a license to supply more than 300,000 metric tons, or about 2.25 million barrels, to U.S. and global markets. At least one tanker may be headed for the New Jersey coast, she said. Sherrill said the law does not allow blanket sanctions waivers unless Russia withdraws its forces from Ukraine.
3. Diesel prices
Diesel prices reached a record $6.28 per gallon on Tuesday, according to GasBuddy, the highest price recorded for any election day.
