The September index rose 2.3 points to -2.1, its third consecutive gain. Expectations increased 4.1 points to -3.8, their strongest reading in more than four years, while current conditions edged up 0.5 point to -0.4.
2. Sector readings improve
Trade posted the sharpest rebound, gaining 6.3 points to -12.4, though retailers remained cautious amid inflation. Construction rose 4.8 points to -7.5, services returned to positive territory at 0.1, and manufacturing improved to -1.6 despite weaker autos.
