Northeast Democrats urge Trump administration action as heating oil costs surge
USO•Northeast Democrats urged Energy Secretary Chris Wright to act on heating oil costs, which they said are about 60% higher than before the Iran conflict and could add roughly $600 to winter bills.
1. Heating costs rise
Led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, northeastern Democratic lawmakers said in a letter dated Monday that heating oil prices were about 60% higher than before the conflict and families could pay roughly $600 more to heat their homes this winter. They cited the Strait of Hormuz closure, low fuel inventories and strong exports as factors contributing to higher heating oil and diesel prices.
2. Lawmakers seek action
The lawmakers urged Wright to support an end to the Iran conflict, restore energy assistance and reverse cuts to clean energy and grid upgrades. Heating oil and diesel are produced from the same refining stream, and about one-third of New England homes use heating oil, with the share reaching about half in some states.
3. Political pressure builds
The letter adds pressure on President Donald Trump over energy costs ahead of next month's midterm elections. Maine senators Susan Collins and Angus King have urged Trump to release the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, which holds about 1 million barrels and has not been used since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
