NorthWestern Energy, Smart Wires partner on Montana-Wyoming transmission upgrades under DOE SPARK grant
NWE•NorthWestern Energy Group and Smart Wires will upgrade a Montana-Wyoming transmission corridor with support from a U.S. DOE SPARK grant, using existing infrastructure to boost power transfer capacity.
1. Planned upgrades
The collaboration will deploy Smart Wires’ SmartValve flow-control technology alongside dynamic line rating to relieve constraints on the corridor. The project aims to increase use of southeastern Montana assets and support regional power transfers, reliability and access to additional energy resources, without new line construction or major substation expansions.
